Art Riga Fair has attracted thousands of visitors and participants over the years, becoming one of the most important and influential art events in the Baltic region.

Express contest: "Light and Shadow"

A month before the first ART RIGA PHOTO FAIR, an open express contest invited everyone to compete for a place in the show, on the theme "Light and Shadow." Entrants posted a photograph on Facebook or Instagram with the hashtag #ARTRIGAPHOTO; the final ranking combined a public poll (50%) with the jury's vote (50%). The winner received a five-metre stand at the fair, and second and third places three-metre stands.

Jury: Gaļina Maksimova, Daiga Freimane, Ilze Kuišele, Dags Vidulejs, Elizabete Annamarija Viduleja.

Photographers had always taken part in ART RIGA FAIR, and in the jubilee year the organisers spun that thread into its own event. Like the main fair, ART RIGA PHOTO FAIR is a selling exhibition: most of what hangs on the walls can be admired and also bought and taken home. The show was built to display the range of contemporary photography, from poetic landscapes and city reportage to portraiture, fashion and studio work, with every stand its own world.

The stands

One of the central stands presented the photography of Gunārs Binde, the master of Latvian photography, whose major retrospective was on show at the same time at the Latvian National Museum of Art.

Lithuanian photographer Alberts Pocejs showed, for the first time in Riga, a series of sensual women's portraits. Around them ran a line of talented young photographers and established masters who have left their mark on Latvian photography, with further guests from Italy, France, Lithuania and Estonia.
